Southern Hawker emergence

This excellent series of photographs showing the emergence of an adult Southern Hawker from it's larval case, were taken by Eakring resident Rob Pedley at his garden pond in 2004.

They show well the development and inflation of the wings after emergence

The Southern Hawker is frequently found well away from water and patrolling males will often hunt for insects along hedgerows and in woodland clearings. Sightings have increased here since the late 1990's.

Our thanks go to Rob for sending us the pictures earlier this year.
