Featuring news and sightings from Eakring

May 3rd
A few new warblers in today and evidence of some movement as two Whitethroats went north along hedgerows at Eakring Flash. There was a new Grasshopper Warbler at the southern end of Eakring Flash this morning, with none of the previous birds being seen now for several days. The first Sedge Warbler finally arrived back on territory today and although there was one briefly along the old hedge in April, Sedge Warblers have been late arriving here this year. There was little moving through, but the bird of the day was the Cuckoo which flew north over Eakring Flash.

May 5th
Extremely quiet this morning, with the only birds moving through being two Swallow and four Linnet. The first Turtle Dove returned to Eakring village and a Lesser Whitethroat at Kersall was new.

May 8th
Another male Grasshopper Warbler was in the Red Hill area this evening, singing from Hawthorns. At Eakring Flash there was very little and there was no sign of any Sedge Warblers or returning Reed Warblers. Eight Swallow flew north.

May 12th
Small numbers of hirundines moving through early morning and the first of the local Swifts back over Eakring village. A Turtle Dove flew north and a new Sedge Warbler was at the southern end of Eakring Flash. Odd warblers are still arriving across the area.

May 17th
A small amount of hirundines moving through after the rain petered out. Another quiet Spring morning, but of note were two Turtle Dove through south-west and another Sedge Warbler finally made it back to Eakring Flash.

May 20th
Two Reed Warblers finally arrived back at Eakring Flash today, with both birds in their usual waterside locations at Eakring Flash. Other new warblers included a Sedge Warbler and single Willow Warbler.

May 22nd
A Barn Owl showed extremly well late evening as it hunted fields in the area, whilst a Little Owl has been favouring the telegraph poles along the Eakring-Wellow minor road on recent evenings. One has also been seen near Eakring Field Farm for the first time in over a year in the past few days.

May 24th
A Whimbrel called three times as it flew north-east over the Red Hill area during the early hours of this morning (01:40h) being heard during a moth-trapping session.

May 27th
A very quiet morning in increasing rain. A Hobby was over Eakring village early morning and at Eakring Flash, a full compliment of singing Sedge Warblers with five males present today. Also one Reed Warbler singing and three Swallows went north (two) and east.

May 31st
After being very quiet over the past few weeks, the male Grasshopper Warbler showed well at the southern-end of Eakring Flash this morning. The Hobby which was seen on 27th, was again hunting the Eakring Flash and Eakring village areas, eventually reappearing with prey and flying off north over Lound Wood.

An evening visit to the area provided a surprise with confirmation of breeding Long-eared Owls, when one was seen carrying prey back to the nest site during the early evening.
