Featuring news and sightings from Eakring

August 3rd
Two Green Sandpipers were on the small pool at Penny Pasture Common this morning. Otherwise, the area was very quiet on a day which felt more like late September, rather than early August. 67 Linnets were in stubble fields at Red Hill.

August 5th
A Peregrine flew north over Tug Bridge Farm late evening and was probably the immature bird seen at the end of July.

August 10th
Good numbers of Whitethroats around Eakring Flash this morning, with at least 16 birds there and two Reed Warblers. Nine Tree Sparrows were indicative of another good breeding season this year. At Hare Hill Wood, there were four Common Buzzards. A flock of Goldfinch at Penny Pasture Common, numbered at least 75 birds.

August 12th
A Whimbrel flew high south-west over Eakring Flash at 07:30h this morning. Two Yellow-legged Gulls (an adult and a 3rd Summer) were in fields with at least 250+ Lesser Black-backed Gulls, just north of Leyfields.

August 16th
A single Green Sandpiper flew south-west over Eakring Flash this morning. A good variety of warblers were present there, with at least five Reed Warblers (including one migrant bird along the old hedge) two Willow Warbler, single Chiffchaff, Sedge Warbler and Lesser Whitethroat along with numerous Whitethroats. A Tree Pipit flew south-west over Penny Pasture Common. There were numerous Yellow Wagtails in the area today, along with at least four passage birds heading south.

August 18th
A Barn Owl was showing well at a site in the area late this evening.

August 19th
Large numbers of Lesser Black-backed Gulls in or flying over the area this evening, with one Yellow-legged Gull in with a large group at Eakring Field Farm. Most surprising sighting was the Curlew in stubble fields in the same general area. Two Snipe were at Penny Pasture Common.

August 22nd
The regular Barn Owl was again seen this morning, two Common Buzzards were at two sites in the area and a Turtle Dove was present at Eakring Field Farm. Good numbers of Tree Sparrows noted today. Flocks of 20 near Eakring Flash and at least 15 were in the Eakring Field Farm/Penny Pasture Common areas.

Migrants included small numbers of Swallow moving south and Yellow Wagtails were also obviously on the move. Six Willow Warblers were at Eakring Flash and with odd birds throughout the area today, Willow Warbler is another species that is moving through in some numbers.

August 24th
A productive morning, although most of the migrant activity occurred just after the low cloud lifted and conditions started to improve. Initial indications were that this may be a good morning, with a group of 17 Swallow going high south and a Whinchat along the hedge at the northern-end of Eakring Flash. However, for the next hour and a half there was no migrant activity at all.

The improvement in the weather induced a short-lived hirundine movement, and counts of birds over Penny Pasture Common produced 249 House Martin and 49 Swallow moving south-west.

There was also a stunning male Redstart (first for the year) at Penny Pasture Common, which showed well in the Hawthorns, a Hobby flew through and a single Snipe was at the pool there.

Two Common Buzzards were in the Lound Wood/Red Hill area, but there were noticably fewer warblers around today. Just five Willow Warbler and the same number of Whitethroat were found, but much of the area was not covered today.

August 26th
Little around today, but 77 Swallow went south and south-west through the area and a late Swift was at Eakring Flash. Three Snipe were at Eakring Meadows.

August 27th
A trickle of migrants moving through this morning, until the wind-speed increased when migration became less evident. At Eakring Flash, migrants along the old hedge included small numbers of common warblers, a Reed Warbler and a Spotted Flycatcher. Two Tree Pipits arrived at 07:20h, landing in the old hedge before moving off north-east ten minutes later.

August 31st
A few migrants moving through this morning with an adult Peregrine the obvious highlight as it flew low south-west over Eakring Flash at 08:05h. Although there were few warblers throughout the area, the seven Chiffchaff at Eakring Flash represented quite a fall/arrival. A single Whitethroat was also there. Six Teal flew south-east over Penny Pasture Common, during one of several periods of rain and 143 House Martins flew south-west.
