Bedstraw Hawk-moth Hyles gallii (Rottemburg, 1775)
Status .....Rare in Nottinghamshire and usually appearing slightly earlier in the year than other migrant Hawk-moths. There was a recent run of records concerning both adults and larvae each year between 2003 and 2011 (including one nectaring at Valerian near Eakring on September 9th 2006), with blank years in 2005 and 2010. It is not entirely improbable, that a small population has bred for a number of years in the Mansfield/Sherwood Forest area, based on the number of records from that area.

Two photographically proven records which were not reported to the county recorder, concerned an adult nectaring at Buddleia at King's Mill Reservoir on September 6th 2013 (Lowe, A.) and of a larva at Sherwood Pines on July 15th 2017 and for several years subsequently (Lowe, A.). The most recent (officially documented) records have been from Bestwood Village on July 31st 2019 (Tobin, S.) and Stanton-on-the-Wolds on August 1st 2019 (Mathers, S.).
