A working checklist of Nottinghamshire Curculionoidea (Weevils)
...
Weevils (Curculionoidea) are charismatic beetles with an obvious photographic charm and almost comical appearance. The often grossly extended rostrum and large, rounded eyes, help give Weevils their comedic appearance and they are a source of great amusement to children on minibeast hunts.

But Weevils don't charm everyone and many species are damaging pests to crops and wooden structures, so their popularity has often confined to the specimen drawers of museums and coleopterists.

After years of neglect, there has been something of a revival of interest towards Weevils, and thanks has to go to the advent of digital cameras, internet websites and social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

Weevil recording in Nottinghamshire

The ability to photograph something, upload it to social media and have it potentially identified by experts within a matter of minutes, has changed the face of how many view invertebrates and invertebrate recording. Its changed it for the better; certainly generating many more records to national recording schemes through social media, mobile phone apps and recording websites such as iRecord, which support the online collection and collation of biological data.

...

Largely as a result and in accordance with much of the above - the interest in (and recording of) Nottinghamshire Weevils is currently on the rise. Local coleopterist Adrian Dutton has accumulated numerous Weevil records from around the county and Tim Sexton, the assistant reserve manager at the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust's Attenborough Nature Reserve, has given much time to both recording and promoting the Weevils he has recorded from the reserve. Enthusiasm rubs off and Tim's recording efforts have spurred us on to increase the amount of time we spend recording Weevils in the county.

Nottinghamshire Curculionoidea

Curculionoidea incorporates the Families currently known as the Nemonychidae, Anthribidae, Rhynchitidae, Attelabidae, Apionidae, Nanophyidae, Dryophthoridae, Erirhinidae, Raymondionymidae, Curculionidae and Platypodidae. The Scolytidae were previously regarded as a separate Family but are now incorporated as a sub-Family (Scolytinae) of the Curculionidae. The following list of Nottinghamshire Curculionoidea, was originally derived and built from data extracted from the National Recording Scheme for Coleoptera: Curculionoidea.

The data was sent to us in January 2018 by Adrian Fowles, who currently runs the scheme along with Colin Campbell and Mark Gurney and so we were delighted to receive the scheme's records for VC56, exchanged when we contributed our own Curculionoidea records and data. The National Recording Scheme's data, lists the following contributors and sources as data providers.

Balfour-Browne Club database, BRC MG Morris dataset, C Barnes - Lincs weevils, Clive Washington Weevil records, DJ Gibbs Weevil data, Entomologist's Monthly Magazine, H Kenward Weevil records, Invertebrate Site Register (English Nature 1997), iRecord additions, JS Denton, M Gurney, MG Telfer, ML Luff Apionidae Collection, National Trust, National Trust Apionidae data (Oct 2015), Natural England ISR additions, Natural England - Riparia, RSPB Mapmate dataset, R Wright Weevil records, SA Lane Weevil data to 18/09/2015, Scolytinae data from Tim Winter via BRC, T Bantock Curculionidae 2015 and The Coleopterist.

Supplementing the initial list resulting from the records sent by the National Recording Scheme, are those species sourced from our own records and those from the following list of contributors and organisations, who have contributed their invertebrate records for use on this website in recent years.

Adrian Dutton, Allan and Annette Binding, Bob Merritt, Charlie Barnes, Jim Flanagan, K N A Alexander, Netherfield Wildlife Group, Nottingham Biological and Geological Record Centre, Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, Pauline Bradford, Sherwood Forest Trust, Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre, Sorby Invertebrate Group, Stuart Warrington. (The National Trust Clumber Park invertebrate records), Tim Sexton and Wil Heeney.

We would like to thank everyone who have contributed, but would especially like to thank both Rob Johnson and Peter Acton of the Nottingham Biological and Geological Record Centre, for their willingness to share records and to Adrian Dutton and Tim Sexton for helping to finalise the finished species list.
