Eakring Birds
Incorporating NBN Gateway maps into www.eakringbirds.com

In an effort to continue to improve www.eakringbirds.com, September 2011 saw us upload the UK distribution maps supplied by the NBN Gateway into our invertebrate photo galleries. This work took a while to complete, as we had around 1 800 maps to incorporate.

The maps go some way to giving the reader an indication of species range across the country, but it is fair to say that the NBN can only be as good as the information fed into it and the maps are not 100% accurate and coverage of some species is extremely patchy.

This is because there are known incorrect records contained within the NBN data and its maps through past misidentifications, but the maps still give the general visitor to www.eakringbirds.com, more of an idea about species range.

The maps also include historical records from 10km grid squares and it would perhaps be better if the system or it's maps clearly differentiated old records from modern. Over the years, the NBN Gateway will continue to improve, as long as it is supported by all those who record, or are involved in recording our natural history.
