Scaphidium quadrimaculatum (Olivier, 1790)
Although one of the Rove Beetles, S. quadrimaculatum is completely different in shape. During survey work of Sherwood Forest Coleoptera in July 2008, this beetle was found twice, both times sitting on the underside of fallen logs, but has a tendancy to drop off readily when approached. The beetle in the lower two photographs was found at Sherwood Forest in October 2008.
