Pterostichus melanarius (Illiger, 1798)
Found to be fairly common under logs during the daytime at Sherwood Forest, P. melanarius is completely black and shiny. A fairly large Carabid, it measures up to 18mm in length, but is usually slightly less. This is a common species, found in most habitats, including gardens.
