Myrmica rubra (Linnaeus, 1758)
Probably the most regularly encountered red Ant in Nottinghamshire, frequenting most habitats and including gardens. Nests under stones and logs etc. Identification is achieved by examining the area between the spines, which is smooth in M. rubra but ridged in M. ruginodis.
