Hylastes opacus (Erichson, 1836)
This small bark beetle (around 3mm) was found under the bark of a felled Pine at Budby South Forest, a site that forms part of the Sherwood Forest NNR. A total of seven adults were present and eventually identified as Hylastes opacus. Incidentally, this seems to be the first record from the NNR since the early 1900's, but Hylastes opacus has more recently been recorded from the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust's reserve at Spalford Warren, north of Newark.
