Donacia simplex (Fabricius, 1775)
A large leaf beetle found on waterside vegetation, especially Bur-reed. During an invertebrate survey of an area of Newstead Abbey in June 2013, we found two specimens of Donacia simplex, but a bed of Bur-reed near the waterfall on the large ornamental lake, produced dozens. A widespread species across much of the UK. Both male and female are metallic brown, although there is a hint of green in the elytra of the male. Both sexes are illustrated.
