Cantharis dicipiens (Baudi, 1871)
Cantharis dicipiens is a slim-bodied beetle that belongs to the Cantharidae group, more commonly known as Soldier Beetles. There are about 40 UK species and they are frequent visitors to thistles and umbelliferous flowers, where they probably prey on other flower-feeding insects. At a length of around 12.5mm, C. dicipiens is commonly found in woodlands. The one pictured was found in just such habitat, at Warsop Wood in May 2008.
