Rabocerus gabrieli (Gerhardt, 1901)
On immediate appearance this small beetle is very similar to a ground beetle, but R. gabrieli actually belongs to the Salpingidae family. There are just 11 species of Salpingidae in the UK, most associated with dead wood. There are two Rabocerus species, both of which are uncommon with R. gabrieli currently classed as Nb. The one pictured was found after dark on a dead Birch stump at Sherwood Forest in late November 2008.
