Generally patchily distributed across much of the UK, the first definite
modern Nottinghamshire record of Saperda
populnea, came when this attractive longhorn was found by Samantha Batty
at Gamston Wood, near Retford in late May 2026.
Historically, J.W. Carr lists a record from East Park Wood at Laxton in
1906 (Chamberlain), but there is also an extremely
vague and unconfirmed claim of this species listed on the Invertebrate
Site Register, but with no recorder, or determiner mentioned and with a
given date range from 1980-1989, that really should be enough to discard it.
In addition to the individual shown below, many of the characteristic galls caused by the feeding larvae, were counted on the
stems of young Aspen. This species may ultimately be found on some of
our former colliery sites, on which Aspen Populus tremula is
usually planted. |
