Ontholestes murinus (Linnaeus, 1758)
...
A very distinctive Rove Beetle, which is rarely encountered unless deliberately looked for. We have only found two examples of this beetle, both at dung in Sherwood Forest CP. It moves very quickly if disturbed. These two sightings also represent the first records for Sherwood Forest NNR. There is only one other similar species in the UK, with which it can be confused - O. tesselatus, which is larger of the two and measuring around 20mm, whilst O. murinus is around 14mm in length.
