Hygrobia hermanni (Fabricius, 1775)
Most Water Beetles are difficult to identify, but Hygrobia hermanni differs from most by being able to make a grating noise. Because of this, it is more often known as the Screech Beetle. This is a fairly large and distinctive species which is found widely across Nottinghamshire and our knowledge of its distribution in VC56, is thanks to the remarkable recording efforts of Bob Merritt.  This one was netted from the pool on Budby South Forest in August 2009.
