Hygrobia hermanii
Most Water Beetles are difficult to identify, but Hygrobia hermanii differs from most by being able to make a grating noise. Because of this, it is more often known as the Screech Beetle. This is a fairly large and distinctive species. Water Beetles have been totally overlooked throughout all Coleoptera recording at Sherwood Forest NNR. Consequently species such as this, seem to be new to the NNR. This one was netted from the pool on Budby South Forest in August 2009.
