Creophilus maxillosus (Linnaeus, 1758)
....
A large and extremely impressive Rove Beetle, Creophilus maxillosus was one of the species we had expected to turn up at carrion in Clipstone Old Quarter during April 2009. However, we stumbled across this one sat at the top of Nettles at Sherwood Forest CP in early May 2009. C. maxillosus is around 20mm in length and covered with grey hairs, making it perhaps the most readily identified of all the Rove Beetles. This was the first Sherwood Forest NNR record for over 100 years.
