Chrysopilus cristatus (Fabricius, 1775)
This is a common Snipe Fly (Rhagionidae) typically found in damp, shady wooded sites. Both sexes are illustrated here, the female being quite different from the much darker male. This female (lower photographs) was photographed at Wellow Park in July 2012, but we have also recorded this fly at Warsop Main Pit Top and several other sites near water.
