| Metellina
marianae is a widespread orb-weaving spider which
prefers dark habitats, such as cave entrances, tunnels
and hollow trees etc. The adults we have found have all
been much darker than Metellina segmentata and M.
mengei, but sub-adults (bottom photographs) do seem
to show more colouration. Having said that, adults are
still very well marked. These photographs show several
individuals that were found down an old underground water
reservoir at Red Hill near Eakring, which used to provide
water for Rufford Abbey many years ago. All were found
just inside one of three entrances to the reservoir. |
