Cyclosa conica (Pallas, 1772)
An unusually shaped abdomen, gives rise to this spider's latin name. Cyclosa conica has only been recorded on four occasions at Sherwood, including an historical record quoted by Carr. More recent records came in 1978 and 2002, before we found this one at Sherwood Forest CP in September 2009, on the lower branches of an Oak in one of the older sections of the forest. The male is shown in the lower two photographs.
