Hairy Cellar Beetle Mycetaea subterranea (Fabricius, 1801)
This is a tiny beetle and one which, if seen in any vegetation sample such as dry manure etc, will often be discarded through its very small size (less than 2mm) alone. And the fact that there are a range of very similarly looking species, does not help the recording of this beetle. There are just two recent records of Mycetaea subterranea from Nottinghamshire, with one recorded in the north-east of VC56 by Charlie Barnes and Phil Lee in 2016 and the one illustrated below, which turned up in a manure heap sampled by Nick and Samantha Brownley, at Lowdham in early 2026.
