Callicera aurata (Rossi, 1790)
A large species and distinctly 'Bee like'. Described as being "a difficult Hoverfly to find", UK records of Callicera aurata are few and far between, meaning that this record from Dyscarr Wood in August 2014 is significant. This one was found and photographed by Pauline Bradford, who kindly let us use her photograph.
